There are 23 days to go in the call for submissions for the Aesthetica Art Prize. Now in its eighth year, the award presents an opportunity for artists working in all media to showcase their work to a wider audience. In the countdown, we spotlight longlisted artist聽Rebeka Lord, whose painting Send Me on My Way聽was published in the Aesthetica Art Prize Anthology 2015,聽Future Now.
Lord’s work is based on the idea that different people perceive the same objects differently. Currently, it is the artist’s聽own perception that she is聽examining. She is interested in the way that her聽eyes are drawn to certain points in an image and how the聽brain interprets that image, creating new structures and positive and negative spaces.
Using prints of her聽photographs to document the scene as captured by the camera, Lord then accentuates the image using oil, cont茅 pastel and pencil to create perspective, structure, and space. She also聽records the flow of her eye across the page or through the object. The colour palette is based on the colours in the scene, but colour is often re-assigned to highlight visual relationships.聽Send Me on My Way聽is a representation of Lord’s observation from underneath Eastbourne Pier.
