The theme for the fifth edition of is Truth, Fact, Fiction, Lies. Looking at how photography is used for storytelling, the festival presents 27 photographers exhibiting in various venues around the city centre.
Key features of the festival include The Sochi Project and Yvette Monahan鈥檚 The Time of Dreaming the World Awake. The Sochi Project is the combined effort of Rob Hornstra and Arnold van Bruggen, who have been working together since 2007 to tell the story of the site of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Committed practitioners of 鈥渟low journalism鈥, they have been engaging with the region and exploring the community and the landscape long before the lens of the international media turned its attention towards the area. The work will be on display at The City Assembly from 5 July.
At The Copper House Gallery, Yvette Monahan presents her portrait of a small region in Southern France, concentrating on the story of Bugarach, the 鈥渕agical鈥 mountain connected to a Mayan prophecy which indicated that the world as we know it would end on 21 December 2012. Some believed Bugarach was to be the first bastion of the new era for humanity. Monahan鈥檚 work displays a landscape of possibility and an environments full of portents beyond the visual reality.
PhotoIreland will also be running a Summer Campus, which offers space to converse, reflect and create during four days of the festival. Visitors can enjoy a selection of events and exhibitions such as The Book & Magazine Fair, The Library Project and Portfolio 14. The festival will also present a number of shortlisted and award-winning photobooks from across the world as part of The Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards and the Fotobook Kassel Dummy Award.
