Future Now Symposium: Opens Today

: The Aesthetica Art Prize Symposium聽opens today聽at York St John University and continues tomorrow, with a two-day programme of talks, panel discussions and portfolio reviews with some of the UK’s leading art organisations, publications and curators. Future Now presents an opportunity for artists, those working in the sector and those who are interested in art and culture to network with key figures, discuss best practice and gain essential聽industry insight and advice.

 

Today welcomes a selection of artists featured in this year’s Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition: Liz West, James Winter and Rachel Ara. The artists talk about what it means to be working in today’s contemporary art scene as emerging and mid-career practitioners, offering unique insight into their practice.

The final session of the day is聽Session 6: Discovering Creativity – Art Prize Recognition, Exposure and Progression Routes.聽The panel will discuss the power of the art prize in identifying the work of talented practitioners, and bringing their creativity to the fore. It offers an insight into the significance of awards in the art world. Speakers include Eleanor Clayton, Curator,聽Hepworth Wakefield; Carla Rapoport, Director and Founder, Lumen Prize; Shonagh Manson, Jerwood Foundation; Daniel F. Herrmann, Curator Maxmara Art Prize,Whitechapel Gallery; and Selina Oakes,聽Aesthetica Art Prize. Chaired by Reyahn King, Chief Executive,York Museums Trust / former聽John Moore鈥檚 Painting Prize聽Judge.

The聽Portfolio Review Sessions are designed for practitioners working across all media, including drawing and painting, photography and digital art, sculpture, design and three-dimensional art, video, installation and performance. Here artists聽have the opportunity to book a slot with industry experts who can give you essential advice and guidance either on your current practice, or your career progression opportunities.

There will also be film screenings at 1331, providing an opportunity to see works from the Aesthetica Art Prize in a cinema context.聽The film screening programme includes Andrea Luka Zimmerman鈥檚 shortlisted feature-length documentary Estate: A Reverie聽currently on show at the Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition. Screenings also include films from the Aesthetica Short Film Festival Official Selection.

The day closes with the Networking Party from 8pm at 1331.聽An excellent opportunity to network with other symposium delegates and attendees, the Thursday night Networking Party is a place where聽you can connect with friends old and new in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
