announces Nikolai Bakharev, Zanele Muholi, Viviane Sassen and Mikhael Subotzky & Patrick Waterhouse as the four shortlisted artists for the Deutsche B枚rse Photography Prize 2015. The annual prize, established by the gallery in 1996, aims to recognise and reward the exhibited work or publication of a living photographer of any nationality, who has significantly contributed to photography in Europe over the past 12 months. This year’s selection showcases a diversity of photographic approaches, which include video, object and text based works and encompass social documentary, portraiture and contemporary art photography.
Working in partnership with the Deutsche B枚rse Group since 2005, the award offers shortlisted photographers the opportunity to exhibit at The Photographers’ Gallery from 17 April until 7 June 2015, and subsequently showcase work at the in Frankfurt. The winner of the 拢30,000 prize will be announced at an exclusive award ceremony at The Photographer’s Gallery on 28 May 2015. Judged by a select jury of experts from the , and MMK Museum f眉r Modern, the four shortlisted photographers were nominated for their engaging and socially-conscious projects.
The prize has selected Nikolay Bakharev for his portraits of Russian bathers on public beaches in the 1980s, and ‘visual activist’ Zanele Muholi for her publication Faces and Places 2006-2014 concerning black LGBT identity in post-apartheid South Africa. Viviane Sassen has also been chosen for her distinctive exhibition Umbra (2014) at , and Mikhael Subotzky & Patrick Waterhouse for their publication Ponte City (2014) which offers an intimate social portrait of the remaining residents of a 54-floor apartment block built in 1976 in Johannesburg.
