鈥淎 photograph isn鈥檛 necessarily a lie, but nor is it the truth. [鈥 You have to be ready to welcome the unexpected.” – Martine Franck (1938-2012).
To mark the opening of its new venue for photography, Fondation Henri Cartier Bresson pays tribute to the socially-engaged photographer and activist through a retrospective.

Franck was truly engaged with humanity, as she expresses in her own words: 鈥淚 feel concerned by what鈥檚 happening in the world and involved in what surrounds me. I don鈥檛 want to just 鈥渄ocument鈥, I want to know why something bothers me or appeals to me and how a situation can affect a person. I鈥檓 not trying to create a situation and never work in a studio; I鈥檓 trying more to understand, to grasp reality. I鈥檝e found in photography a language that suits me.鈥
