Retold Narratives

Retold Narratives

Commemorating the centenary of WWI by offering female perspectives on events,聽No Man’s Land –聽an exhibition of images taken by contemporary and wartime photographers – comprises rarely-seen works taken by women working as nurses, ambulance drivers and official artists, as well as 21st century practitioners reflecting on the conflict.

Featured here is Shot At Dawn by Chloe Dewe Mathews, a series uncovering the untold narratives of British, French and Belgian troops executed for cowardice and desertion. Each large-scale image depicts a site at which these acts took place, highlighting the poignancy and history of these locations. As the artist explains: 鈥淏y finding and photographing these places, I am re-inserting the individual into that space, stamping their presence back onto the land, so that their histories are not forgotten鈥.

The exhibition is open at聽The Turnpike, Leigh, until 12 January. Find out more
