Interstices X
The world is constantly in a state of flux. People, landscapes and structures change through time as an inevitable accumulation of experience. These are the concepts that underpin Tom Cartmill鈥檚 practice: the ways that buildings age, weather and transform with the passage of time. Cartmill evokes a 鈥減atina of experience鈥 in his pictures, which is directly related to the methods used to make them, combining conventional painting techniques with more innovative processes. Layers are built up, to be abraded, worn through and overlaid, mirroring the passage of time and giving glimpses of an unfolding story, as the work, like history, makes itself.
