Creepy, ominous, entangled clouds of energy form Kate McDonnell鈥檚 three-dimensional objects and installations. A Ballpoint pen is used to redact till receipts. Heaps of crushed tissue paper crawl up walls and over domestic objects. Paper is twisted into tortured garlands. It鈥檚 a cycle of redacting, tearing, twisting, crushing and erasing. McDonnell鈥檚 practice is a testament to hours of purposeless activity and restlessness; it embodies pointless labour and wasted time, regret and shame. In the same way that imprisoned wild animals engage in repetitive movements to self-soothe, she manifests mental unease as an action, the works merely remnants of this.
