Northern Irish visual artist Ian Cumberland is fascinated by Guy Debord鈥檚 concept of the 鈥淪ociety of the Spectacle鈥 and its contemporary implications, where authentic life is replaced by constructed representations – particularly relevant to an age of social media. Paintings such as Distance evoke this concept through an unsettling sense of a heightened normalcy.
