“I鈥檓 not a photographer. I shoot for architecture 鈥 if there鈥檚 art here it鈥檚 a byproduct. Yet the images stand alone.” Focusing on 10 key photographs from the 1950s and 1960s, Denise Scott Brown: Wayward Eye聽at Betts Project, London,聽聽reveals the architect and theoretician’s interest in urbanism, Pop Art and the American vernacular.
The selection highlights her interdisciplinary lens, approaching the era’s social transformations through an engagement with culture, aesthetics, history and society. From the geometric landscapes of Tintoretto鈥檚 Venice to the neon lights of the Vegas Strip, these images paved the way for Scott Brown (b. 1931) and Robert Venturi’s (b. 1925) seminal postmodern text,聽Learning from Las Vegas, providing influential models for architectural practice.
