Imaginative Structures

鈥淐reating architecture is like planting seeds of the future.鈥 Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto (b. 1971) is known for an innovative practice that combines philosophy with sustainability. Creating visionary residential and institutional structures that offer connections between the built environment and the human body, the designer takes a fresh approach to the discipline. Sou Fujimoto: Futures of the Future, the inaugural exhibition at the new Japan House London, combines intricate models with striking photography to draw a portrait of his ground-breaking work.

Projects including House N, L’Arbre Blanc and the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 (featured above) embody Fujimoto鈥檚 ethos and are included in the show, demonstrating deconstructed layouts that provide new and experimental forms. Offering insight into the architect鈥檚 ideas and production process, the show re-evaluates the discipline鈥檚 potential, suggesting new possibilities for the future.

One such piece is Architecture is Everywhere, designed for the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Bridging the boundaries between art and design, the work illustrates how structures can be found within the everyday. The conceptual piece positions commonplace items upon wooden plinths, creating 鈥渇ound architecture鈥 by placing tiny human figures amongst readymade objects. Expanding on these ideas, Fujimoto will give an accompanying lecture at the Design Museum, London (12 June).

Japan House London, opening 22 June, celebrates the rich cultural landscape of the country, showcasing its artisans, craftsmen, designers, performers and musicians. By highlighting both internationally renowned individuals and emerging artists, the creative centre celebrates the best in art, design, innovation and technology whilst supporting a new wave of talent. As Michael Houlihan, Director General, notes: 鈥淟ondon has long been a crossroads for culture, ideas and trade. From June, Japan will have a special place where its voice can be heard and its stories can enrich this exceptional fabric of openness and understanding.鈥
