Andres Serrano鈥檚 (b. 1950) practice is aligned with baroque painters, translating portraiture dripping with conceptual depth and social consideration into the 21st century. Each of his images contains an element of the Old Masters, for example through religious symbolism, however, the styles are reformed as a reflection on today鈥檚 political landscape, without passing judgement onto the individual. His sitters come from a range of different backgrounds which are treated with sensitivity and imagination 鈥 for example one series address homelessness, acknowledging each figure as a 鈥渞esident of the city鈥 鈥 powerfully confronting social and economic issues which are today.
