The word 鈥渟ymmetry鈥 comes from the Greek 鈥渟ymmetria鈥, meaning 鈥渁greement in dimensions, due proportion, arrangement.鈥 The concept has been fundamental to art and culture for millennia, and remains associated with visual harmony. Munich-based artist Alexander Grombach uses the same sense of order when constructing minimalist photographs. He describes symmetry as a way 鈥渙f dealing with life鈥檚 chaos.鈥 Lampposts form satisfying rows, receding 鈥 uniformly 鈥 into the distance. A lime green wall is sliced down the middle by a drainpipe, windows positioned either side of the divide. These images document patterns in urban and cultivated landscapes, from flattened crops to glistening plastic chairs in tiers. 鈥淭he majority of my pictures are taken from everyday life, some would even call them trivial,鈥 Grombach says. 鈥淗owever, I always try to infuse them with a sense of magic.鈥
