AIPAD: Visual Platforms

More than 100 of the world鈥檚 leading photography galleries come together this April for The Photography Show, taking place at the huge Pier 94 venue in the heart of New York. Presented by AIPAD, the event 鈥 now in its 38th year 鈥 showcases contemporary, modern, and 19th century takes on the medium, as well as video and new technologies. Featuring institutions from a whole range of locations, including North and South America, Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico and the Middle East, the fair offers a visual platform for the organisation鈥檚 members, as well as emerging galleries, book dealers and publishers.

鈥淲e are excited to continue the extraordinary momentum from last year鈥檚 record-breaking show,鈥 explains Richard Moore, President of AIPAD. 鈥淲e are working to make this edition even more compelling, with more international exhibitors, special exhibitions, and new programs.鈥 This includes an expanded timetable of talks and panel discussions, the annual award ceremony and an exclusive set of photographs brought together by Sir Elton John.

In another display unique to this year, Forever Young: Selections from the Joe Baio Collection of Photography explores the theme of childhood and adolescence, presenting images that evoke the unadulterated elation, fun, spontaneity and extreme transformation experienced during life鈥檚 early years.聽Impressively, almost every movement from photographic history is represented in this collection, which corresponds with the aesthetic and social development of this enigmatic art form. Selected from a vast accumulation of 6,000 pictures, this one-off presentation, which Baio co-curated with Anne Griffin, includes work by some of the greats of the field, including Nan Goldin, Ryan McGinley, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Brass盲i, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andr茅 Kert茅sz, Dorothea Lange, Saul Leiter, and Garry Winogrand, to name but a few. Joining these two exhibits is a third that investigates the creative practices of a select group of contemporary black artists, including emerging and internationally acclaimed practitioners who have been informed or inspired by the Black Panthers. All Power: Visual Legacies of the Black Panther Party is drawn from a book of the same name and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Seattle chapter of this extraordinarily significant organisation.
