For the 35th edition of , 89 of the world鈥檚 leading fine art photography galleries will present a wide range of museum-quality work, including contemporary, modern, and 19th century photographs as well as photo-based art, video, and new media.
Featuring galleries from the US, Europe, Asia, and South America, new exhibitors this year include , Paris, and , Beijing. This year there will also be a special focus upon Latin American photography with work by contemporary Cuban artists, many never seen before in the U.S., on view at . Appearing elsewhere at gallery is work from Cuban-born artist Mario Algaze, who is best known for his observant and witty street photography made in major capitals throughout Latin America. Showing work from Guatemala is , Phoenix, AZ, which will present a one-person exhibition of the work of Luis Gonz谩lez Palma, who 鈥減ortrays the soul of a people鈥 in his portraits of individuals of Mayan descent using a range of exotic photographic techniques, collage elements, and painted surfaces.
Highlights in Portraits and Self-Portraits include an iconic 1919 portrait of Georgia O鈥橩eeffe by Alfred Stieglitz, Melissa Shook鈥檚 daily self-portraits taken across one year, and 鈥渄rifting portrait photographer鈥 Katsumi Watanabe鈥檚 1960s and 1970s images of bar hostesses, drag queens, and gangsters in Shinjuku, a section of Tokyo which lays claim to the busiest train station in the world. In Landscapes/Places is a dramatic landscape taken in Beijing by Lois Conner in 1985, the ancient monolithic statues at Easter Island in new work by Reenie Barrow, and Richard Misrach鈥檚 view of a palm tree.
Also on show will be recently discovered contact prints by Margaret Bourke-White, of burlesque dancers taken in 1936, Louis Faurer鈥檚 1962 fashion photography for , and Louise Dahl-Wolfe鈥檚 bathing beauty portrait, Jean Patchett, Granada, Spain, 1953. This year the fair will will include a timely memorial group of work by modern master Ray K. Metzker, who died at age 83 in October 2014. His classic images and early work from the 1970s will be shown, alongside iconic image, Hockney Painted this Pool, a 1980 archival pigment print by Bill Owens.
