Identities Transposed

Kriss Munsya was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and raised in Brussels. Here, nestled within a Euro-centric community, he was confronted with his 鈥渄ifferences鈥 early on. Discrimination and violence 鈥 experienced in early childhood 鈥 left a mark upon the artist, shrouding the construction of an authentic identity, and leaving Munsya distanced from a sense of self. The Eraser series translates this experience of detachment and disassociation, providing a critical reflection upon internalised structures. It is a story of change and transformation. Munsya notes: 鈥淚t is a combination of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Dark Side of The Moon, Thom Yorke鈥檚 2006 album The Eraser, and my own experiences. I was always curious about how it would feel to erase someone from your memory 鈥 the sensation of putting yourself in danger. The characters here are trying to erase white dominance by transposing Blackness.鈥
