Momentary Lives

Only the Lonely is the first book on photographer William Gedney in nearly 20 years. This retrospective volume offers a comprehensive survey of his documentary and street work, including his acclaimed series of rural Kentucky, Haight-Ashbury, India, gay pride parades and night scenes. Despite receiving appreciation from Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and John Szarkowski, he remained an under-appreciated artist of his generation. His work became wide-spread after his death in 1989.

William Gedney, Only the Lonely, 1958–1983, by Gilles Mora, Lisa McCarty, and Margaret Sartor, University of Texas Press.
