This October, the will host the first New York survey of work by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist (b.1962). Currently living and working in Zurich, Rist is recognised internationally for her pioneering video art and multimedia installations, many of which envelop viewers in sensual and vivid kaleidoscopic projections. Infusing imagery of the natural world with the technological sublime, the artist celebrates 鈥渢he wonder of evolution鈥 and humankind鈥檚 capacity for wide-ranging physical and psychological experiences.
Spread across the New Museum鈥檚 three central floors, the upcoming exhibition, Pixel Forest, features work from her expansive career; from her early single-channel videos in the 1980s to recent installations that transform architectural spaces into dreamlike environments. The comprehensive show will also boast a new piece created specifically for the New Museum; this combined with her previous output serve as a reminder of her innovative experimentation with new media, and interest in the cross-pollination between technology, biology, nature and communication.
Opening on 26 October and running into the new year, Pixel Forest is an invitation to explore new realms within the technological sublime. Curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Edlis Neeson, Artistic Director; Margot Norton, Associate Curator; and Helga Christoffersen, Assistant Curator, the exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue co-published by the New Museum and Phaidon Press Limited.
