is a聽celebration of excellence in art from across the world. The聽annual award offers artists the opportunity to showcase their work to wider audiences and further their involvement in the international art world. To mark its聽current call for entries, we shine a聽spotlight on longlisted artist Annina Roescheisen. Selected聽for her film聽What are you Fishing for?聽(2014),聽Roescheisen describes herself as a multimedia practitioner聽who looks to iconographies from the past for inspiration.
The German-Slovenian born artist experiments with the mediums of video, photography, installation and sculpture to explore themes of聽individuality and identity.聽What are you Fishing for?聽plunges the viewer聽into the heart of the union between a man and a woman, and their simple existence as humans on Mother Earth. Through the use of聽a cinematic narrative and poetic staging, the artist’s聽mental landscape is mapped out. The characters’ shared melancholy聽is聽expressed through the slowness and stillness of each steadily composed聽shot, and聽an orchestrated coldness emerges through a unravelling聽depiction聽of youthful vivacity and fragility.
Now in its eighth year,聽the 2015 award unites an innovative array of artists, photographers and filmmakers, presenting its selected longlisted and finalist creatives in the Aesthetica Art Prize anthology, Future Now, and the Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition. The showcase at聽, on view until 31 May, challenges our perception of contemporary practices today through a dynamic selection of photography, sculpture, 3D design, painting, drawing, installation, video, film and performance.
The Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition, until聽31 May, York St Mary’s, Castlegate, York, YO1 9RN.
