Venus in Fur

Roman Polanski
Artificial Eye

Roman Polanski鈥檚 latest film mulls over the sexual politics behind the actress-director relationship, taking cues from the man whose seminal 1870 novella gave masochism a name: Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.

Thomas (Mathieu Amalric) stands in a Paris theatre after searching for a leading lady suited to his adaption of Venus in Furs. Enter Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) 鈥 who soon reveals herself to know the play inside out. Like 2011鈥檚 Carnage, Venus in Fur is another broadway adaptation for Polanski; however, the frayed tempers of helicopter parents are here replaced by a one-on-one psychosexual mind game that is framed with his signature claustrophobia.

Though tension builds, this one-room pressure cooker never finds a release, Amalric鈥檚 repressed sexual energy matched at each turn by Seigner鈥檚 dizzying misdirection. Multi-layered and painfully self-aware, Venus in Fur 鈥塩onstantly toys with the boundaries of role play. As the curtain begins close, Thomas鈥 early confession 鈥渢here鈥檚 a lot of me in it鈥 lingers with a thrilling sting.
